There is a heartbreaking moment in the Go-Betweens DVD, That Striped Sunlight Sound, when Grant McLennan talks about the bands future. Its heartbreaking because it captures what would never be. McLennan died shortly after the DVD was made. But, in this scene he talks about how great he thinks the Go-Betweens future will be. As fan of McLennan’s genius, this scene makes his death all the more tragic; not only was a great musician lost, but so was a human being who felt so positive about the future.
Robert Forster, McLennan’s partner in the Go-Betweens, describes these reactions far better then I do. I came across his obit for McLennan after reading Forster’s article about his new album, The Evangelist, which is so a testament to McLennan and includes some of the songs they had written for what would have been the tenth Go-Betweens album. Read both of the articles, watch the vids and listen to the Go-Betweens. Oh, and go to Roberforster.net, to hear The Evangelist, its almost as great as what should have been.
